Mike & Molly actor Billy Gardell recently talked about his dramatic weight-loss journey not only changing his life but also apparently saving it. When Billy Gardell had his breakthrough with Mike & Molly, he weighed 350 lbs. During that time, he was a lead, and his comic timing was something that left people in awe. Billy struggled with his weight since a very young age, as he used food as a coping mechanism and would eat to celebrate his victories, enhance or deflect his feelings.
It took Billy several years to be on the right track after he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Billy ended up losing 170 lbs, and, well, his life has changed ever since. In a recent interview, Billy Gardell talked about the same and revealed how his weight-loss surgery back in 2021 saved him.
Billy Gardell talks about weight-loss surgery saving his life
Billy Gardell sat for an interview on the Breaking Bread podcast and mentioned that he was not only diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, but he also developed concerns about his heart and cholesterol. According to Billy, the only reason he could survive was that he used to play several sports when he was young and also had good genetics. Billy said these were the reasons that helped him carry the weight longer; however, he said one can’t outrun it. He said:
“You can’t outrun those. I think the only reason I was able to survive as long as I did is one, I got decent genetics, and two was I played some sports when I was younger. So I was a big fat guy, but I was a pretty solid fat guy, and I could carry the weight for a long time, but eventually you can’t outrun that.”

According to Billy Gardell, his weight would often fluctuate, with him losing and gaining 30 pounds year after year. Billy Gardell has always credited his wife and kid for being the motivating factor in his life. He shared that at one point, he didn’t want to be that guy who survived what he survived and succeeded at what he succeeded at, and not be able to even get up from a chair.
In 2021, Billy did an ad campaign for Ozempic; however, back then, he didn’t know the drug could be used to lose weight, and he was strictly using it to treat his Type 2 diabetes. When Billy was on Ozempic, he lost 12 pounds. However, he stopped after his deal. Speaking more about the same, Billy revealed:
“I was on Ozempic for a year, and I was their spokesman, but it was for Type 2 diabetes, and they didn’t know it was a weight-loss [drug] yet. For a very nice paycheck, I stopped doing that and just got the surgery because I wanted everything to change, but had I known it was a weight-loss drug, I probably would’ve [ridden] that out.”
Billy Gardell opted for bariatric surgery; what is it?
Billy Gardell opted for bariatric surgery in 2021. Billy admitted that he ‘chickened out’ several times from this, however, he became sick of being tired and sick. When the pandemic hit in 2020, Billy’s weight hovered around 370-380 lbs, and he realized he was at higher risk because of it.
Speaking to PEOPLE in 2024, Billy said that he needed something drastic, and that is when he decided to opt for bariatric surgery, which is a group of operations on the digestive system that help someone lose excess weight and improve their lifestyle. While the surgery helped Billy, it was just the first step, as he had to maintain his diet and other aspects following that.

To mention, Billy had earlier revealed how his tough childhood somewhat led him to use his weight as a kind of safety armor to protect himself. Even when he gained popularity, he struggled with the relationship between his body and food, and it took him nearly 40 years to get back on track with it.
