Tamil film’s sensational duo, Suriya and Jyotika, reinstated people’s faith in love and marriage. The two, who transitioned their on-screen romance to off-screen love, recently completed 20 years of marriage and renewed their vows in an intimate Christian ceremony. Suriya’s waited for four years to marry Jyothika
Jyothika was born into a Punjabi family and hailed from Mumbai, whereas Suriya, son of veteran Tamil actor Sivakumar, was a classic Tamilian. But when the two fell in love, nothing else mattered. When Suriya and Jyotika told their families they wanted to marry, both sides objected.
Since neither family was keen on the alliance, the couple made it clear they would rather remain single. During the recent JFW Favorites Awards, Suriya’s father, Sivakumar, recalled what the actor told his mother when she asked him why he had not fallen in love. His reply was simple, as he told her:
“One can’t fall in love with just any girl.’ Then he fell in love with a girl (Jyotika) from Bombay (now Mumbai). He waited for four years, adamant that if he were to get married to someone, it would be only to her.”
In the same interaction, Sivakumar also revealed how Jyotika stayed with their family instead of choosing a life in Mumbai. Sivakumar said it would have been easy for her to ask Suriya to relocate, but she chose otherwise. Speaking about the same, he said:
“After marriage, she could have made Suriya move to Bombay and settle there. I couldn’t have said anything. But she stayed here for 18 years. Besides, these days, heroines generally aren’t ready for childbirth after marriage and even push their husbands to leave their parents. But Jyotika got married and had two children while living with us.”
Suriya and Jyothika’s cross-cultural love story
It was in 1999 when Suriya met Jyothika Sadanah, who hailed from Mumbai, during the filming of Poovellam Kettupar. At the time, she could hardly speak a word of Tamil, and he hardly spoke Hindi either. After their first meeting, Suriya and Jyothika kept bumping into each other on different occasions. During the filming of Kaakha Kaakha, the two fell in love. When their film was released, the couple was believed to have gotten engaged.
The engagement was low-key, and it is said that Suriya got engaged to Jyothika to buy time to convince his parents about their relationship. After a lot of convincing, the duo got married in 2006 in a traditional Tamil ceremony. After their marriage, Jyotika quit acting and shifted to Chennai.
The couple embraced parenthood with the arrival of their daughter, Diya, and son, Dev. Suriya dotes on Jyotika and has often spoken about the same. In a throwback interview, the actor once spoke about his marriage and stated:
“My marriage to Jo has been all that I expected and much more. Jo has been a wonderful wife and makes an even greater mom.”
