Chennai: Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar has called for greater encouragement of entrepreneurship and new business opportunities, particularly among the younger generation, while stressing the need for closer cooperation between the government and industry to strengthen the state’s economic growth.
Addressing the 80th annual session of the Hindustan Chamber of Commerce (HCC) in Chennai on Tuesday, Prabhakar said youth and women should play a larger role in economic and entrepreneurial activities and not limit their participation to being voters.
He highlighted the importance of industrial growth and sustainable development and said Chennai’s position as a major manufacturing and educational hub should be further strengthened through a stronger industrial ecosystem.
Prabhakar stressed the need for transparency in governance and greater awareness among the business community about government initiatives.
He also called for policies that improve ease of doing business and help enterprises expand.
Highlighting the role of MSMEs as the backbone of the economy, he said greater attention was needed to understand the challenges faced by small businesses and the reasons behind business closures.
He also appreciated HCC’s role in representing industry concerns and facilitating government-industry interaction.
Praveen Kumar Tatia was unanimously elected president of HCC for 2026-27. Hiren B. Shah was elected president-elect, while Dr. Geetha Premkumar and M. Gopinath were elected vice-presidents.
The chamber’s new office at Raheja Towers was also virtually inaugurated by Prabhakar and G.S.K. Velu, chairman and managing director, Trivitron Healthcare / Neuberg Diagnostics Group.
