NEW DELHI: Ukraine has described India’s proposal for a possible ceasefire with Russia as the “broadest” among four proposals received by Kyiv, with Ukrainian foreign minister Andrii Sybiha saying his country was ready to consider a truce covering energy infrastructure and the Black Sea.

Sybiha said proposals for a possible ceasefire had come from India, Turkiye, Egypt and the United States.

He reportedly said Ukraine was ready to consider different formats for a truce, but any agreement should cover not only combat operations but also attacks on energy and port infrastructure and the situation in the Black Sea.

“We have four proposals. The broadest one is India’s proposal. We are ready for an energy and Black Sea ceasefire, but only in this combination… This should be a complete energy truce, a stop to attacks on all energy facilities, including port infrastructure,” Sybiha was quoted as saying.

“In general, we believe a truce could be one of the results of a meeting between President Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin. We are ready for different formats of a truce, including an unconditional one along the line of contact,” he added.

The remarks came about a month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to Putin for a transition from an “endless war” to an “end of war”.

Putin had on Friday praised Modi’s efforts to help end the Ukraine conflict, saying the Indian Prime Minister had consistently raised the issue during their meetings and offered “very good ideas” for finding a mutually acceptable solution.

Speaking at the Valdai Discussion Club forum in Moscow, Putin said Modi, despite their “very good, friendly” relations, had shown a keen interest in facilitating a peaceful settlement.

“Regarding Prime Minister Modi’s position on ending wars and so forth, I can say that he is one of those world leaders who, despite our very good, even friendly, relations, and very good personal ties, constantly raises questions about ending the conflict in Ukraine,” Putin was quoted as saying.

He added that Modi had “very good ideas aimed at finding mutually acceptable solutions”.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, during talks with Sybiha in Kyiv a month ago, had said India was ready to help in efforts to secure peace between Russia and Ukraine.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2022, is now in its fifth year and has killed thousands of civilians, displaced millions and caused widespread destruction of infrastructure.
