Hyderabad:BC Welfare Association president and Rajya Sabha member R. Krishnaiah demanded that the Telangana government stop selling government land and use it to construct permanent buildings for BC hostels and residential schools.

He was speaking at a dharna here on Sunday, organised under the leadership of National BC Students’ Association convener Nikhil Patel, State BC Front chairman Mallesh Yadav and BC Students’ Association general secretary Shiva Krishna Mudiraj.

Krishnaiah demanded the sanction of 100 new college hostels and 100 residential schools for Backward Classes community students. He said government land was public property and should be used for hostels, schools, government offices and houses for the poor. It should not be sold to raise revenue.

He said several hostels and gurukuls for the community were functioning in rented buildings without basic facilities. Students were facing overcrowding, health problems and difficulties in continuing their education. The government was also spending crores of rupees every year on rent, he said. Krishnaiah demanded permanent buildings with all facilities.

He also sought full fee reimbursement for students from the BC community pursuing professional and postgraduate courses. Other demands included bus passes, monthly pocket money of ₹1,000 for girls and ₹800 for boys, and the appointment of additional workers in hostels.
