There have been original Bollywood movies that have been adapted by Hollywood. These include a Wes Anderson favourite from Bollywood, Charulata (1964), being the inspiration behind the making of Forty Shades of Blue (2005) and A Common Man (2013) was remade as A Wednesday (2008). While these movies have been adapted on foreign soil, the projects were handled by foreign directors.

Dating back to Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Parinda in 1989, Nana Patekar gave a stellar performance as a ruthless, unpredictable, and charismatic don from the underworld, going by the name Anna. The Hindi crime thriller went on to win many Filmfare awards, with Jackie Shroff winning Best Actor in the Leading Role (Male), Nana Patekar winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Male), Vidhu Vinod Chopra winning Best Director, Shivkumar Subramaniam winning Best Screenplay, and Renu Saluja winning Best Editor. Nana Patekar also won a National Award for this performance.

While Parinda was loosely inspired by On the Waterfront (1954), they varied significantly in the character progressions and the overall narrative outcome. The English remake, Broken Horses, was an ambitious project under the direction of the same filmmaker, Vidhu Vinod Chopra. During an interview, he said, “We wanted to make an English film of our own movie.”

The movie followed a similar storyline, with small changes implemented with respect to the twists that occurred. There were also slight changes made in the characters, with Vincento D’Onofrio’s Julius Hench functioning in a more composed manner as opposed to his counterpart from Parinda, Nana Patekar’s Anna’s volatile nature.

Nana Patekar sadly passed away on October 8, 2026, after suffering a cardiac arrest. He will last be seen in the upcoming horror-comedy film Shakti Shalini featuring Aneet Padda under the direction of Aditya Sarpotdar.
