Preview for Barcelona v Getafe
Seven games, seven wins, 31 goals. Barcelona’s defence of the La Liga title they retained by eight points last season could hardly have started better, and Hansi Flick’s men return from the international break on Saturday evening looking to keep that perfect record going against a Getafe side who specialise in making life difficult.
Barca were rampant before the break. They hammered Racing Santander 7-2 at Camp Nou, Feyenoord 5-1 in the Champions League and then won 3-1 at Sevilla on September 19 to make it 21 points from 21. They have only conceded seven goals in that time, and they sit five points clear of Atletico Madrid and Real Betis at the top of the table.
The one blot on the build-up is Raphinha. The Brazilian has been the outstanding player in Spain this season, with 14 goals in all competitions and back-to-back La Liga Player of the Month awards, but he came home early from Brazil duty with muscular edema in his right thigh. Scans ruled out anything serious, but Flick is taking no chances with a busy run of fixtures ahead, including the Clásico later this month.
Getafe are exactly the kind of opponent nobody wants straight after an international break. José Bordalás’ side have scored just four goals in seven league games, but they have only conceded seven, and they will arrive in Catalonia with the clear intention of shutting up shop. They went into the break on a high too, with Iván Azón’s 85th-minute winner beating Málaga 1-0 and ending a four-game winless run that included 1-0 defeats to Real Betis and Osasuna.
The problem for Getafe is that this fixture hasn’t been kind to them in recent years. Barcelona are unbeaten in the last five meetings in La Liga, winning four, and the last time these two met, Barca won 2-0 at the Coliseum in April.
The La Liga Table
- Position 1, 2, 3, 4 : Champions League league stage
- Position 5 : Europa League league stage
- Position 6 : ECL Playoffs
- Position 18, 19, 20 : Relegation
Team News for Barcelona v Getafe
Flick confirmed that Raphinha will miss this game and next week’s Champions League clash with Galatasaray. “It’s not an important injury, but it is something we have to take into account, because he has had a lot of injuries and we have to look after him,” he said.
Gabriel Jesus is set to lead the line in his place, and Flick was full of praise for the Brazilian. “That’s the idea. He has improved a lot, he fits our style. He’s doing very well, I like him and he’s ready,” the Barca boss said.
Andreas Christensen (quad), Roony Bardghji and Frenkie de Jong are the other confirmed absentees. De Jong has been training with the group, but he still needs to build up match sharpness after the ligament injury he suffered at the World Cup.
There is good news in goal, with Joan García back in team training and in line to return. Dominik Livakovic is the alternative if Flick decides it is too soon. Eric García is also fit after leaving the Spain camp early with a knee problem.
For Getafe, Mario Martín is available again after serving his suspension. Christantus Uche remains out with a serious knee injury and Juanmi is still working his way back to fitness. Martín Satriano returned early from Uruguay duty with knee inflammation, and although scans showed nothing serious, he is still a doubt to start. Kiko Femenía is back in training after a muscle problem, while Abdel Abqar is gradually returning to the group but is not yet fully available.
