In the upcoming documentary Musk, Justine claims the Tesla and SpaceX CEO treated Vivian’s transition as the “death of a child” and cut off her health insurance shortly after telling her he would always love her. The author recalled Musk telling her to pass a message to their daughter, saying, “I’ll always love her.” The very next day, he allegedly cut off Vivian’s health insurance.
Justine, who was married to Musk from 2000 to 2008, describes Vivian as strong-willed from an early age. The former couple had six children together, but their first son, Nevada, died shortly after birth from Infant Death Syndrome. He was only 10 weeks old in 2002.
In the documentary, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, Justine recalls an incident from when Vivian was around six years old. Musk told their daughter:
“In this world there are winners and losers. Do you want to be a winner or do you want to be a loser?”
That remark, Justine believed, was a message to the little one that she would be considered a failure if she did not follow her father’s wishes.
The emotional distance between Musk and Vivian reportedly grew more pronounced after she came out as transgender in 2020. She later filed to legally change her name and gender in 2022, specifically requesting that her new identity no longer be associated with her biological father after he publicly claimed she was “dead.”
Justine says those public comments caused Vivian considerable pain. She also says in the film, “Elon was telling her, through telling the world, what that point of view actually was.” The author claims Musk made little effort to repair the relationship, adding, “If a relationship ruptures, then it ruptures.”
Musk has yet to respond to the allegations, but Justine says his actions towards their child have been especially painful for her, as she is well aware of the actual pain such a tragedy brings after Nevada died in infancy. Justine recalls saying at the time:
“I was like, ‘We actually went through the actual death of an actual child. And what’s really happening here is this is a child growing up.'”

Vivian has increasingly established a public identity over the years, and it’s strictly separate from her world-famous father. After she legally changed her name and gender in 2022, she has spoken openly about their estrangement and pursued work as a model and activist.
Vivian championed a campaign for Spanish fashion label Desigual in September 2026, while voicing her opinions on artificial intelligence. She was dismissive of AI art, arguing that true art is rooted in human emotion and intention. Vivan said during the launch of Desigual’s Born to Disobey fall 2026 campaign:
“Art is emotion through expression. Since emotion is inherently human, AI takes away any underlying intention and replaces it with plagiarized colors and shapes.”
Her comments drew attention, especially given Musk’s business empire is largely centered on artificial intelligence, automation, and brain-computer interfaces.
The documentary Musk brings renewed attention to Elon and Vivian’s conflict, but from his ex-wife’s perspective. The Tesla founder has not participated in the project and denounced it as a “hit piece.” His lawyer has threatened legal action over what they describe as factual distortions.
