He had a PhD thesis waiting. A research career ahead. A perfectly reasonable reason to say “not now.”
He kept showing up anyway.
Since 2017, Mohd Firdoos Malik has been doing the kind of work that does not trend, free coaching for rural children, stationery runs, health drives, digital literacy camps, gender sensitisation workshops, explaining government schemes to people who did not know they existed.
Not once. Not twice. Year after year, quietly, without a camera.
That consistency took him places. Republic Day Parade, New Delhi in 2019. International Youth Exchange in South Korea. And then Rashtrapati Bhavan in October 2025. President Droupadi Murmu honoured him with the MY Bharat National Service Scheme Award 2022-23, one of just 30 NSS volunteers recognised across the entire country that year.
But here is what stays with you about Firdoos. He never treated social service as a detour from his education. He used his education as a tool for his community. That reframe, from what do I gain to what can I give, is rarer than any award.
Real education does not just fill a resume. It fills a gap someone else could not fill alone.
