At 79, Reba Pal is keeping Bengal’s traditional Patachitra art alive, one painting at a time.
For nearly five decades, the artist from Krishnanagar, West Bengal, has painted Hindu deities on paper and cloth, using intricate details and natural colours. She learnt the craft from her husband, Yashti Pal, after marrying at just 16. Together, they raised four children through their art.
After losing her husband nearly 20 years ago, Reba faced financial struggles. But she never abandoned the art that had sustained her family. Today, she continues to paint, hoping the next generation will carry this artistic legacy forward.
Her journey is a reminder that India’s folk art traditions survive because artists dedicate their lives to preserving them—even through hardship. Supporting artists like Reba means helping keep these cultural treasures alive for generations to come.
How can we do more to support India’s traditional artists? ❤️
