Kolkata: A centuries-old art form from Andhra Pradesh is finding a place in Kolkata this Durga Puja, as the 74 Pally Sarbojanin Durgotsav Committee in Kidderpore have used the traditional Kalamkari, known for its hand-drawn and hand-painted motifs, as part of its decor and the idol of Maa Durga.

Explaining the concept, Kunal Rakshit, Joint Secretary of the committee, said, “This year, our theme is ‘Kal Kamalika’, which explores how the traditional Kalamkari art form is gradually changing with modernisation and being turned into a commercial product. The theme showcases how this art form has evolved. Today, Kalamkari is used in sarees, home decor, kurtas, and many other products. As it becomes increasingly commercialised and cheaper, the traditional craftsmanship behind it is gradually disappearing. Through this theme, we want to highlight how the original art form is at risk of being lost.”
Kalamkari motifs adorn the pandal’s temple-inspired structure as well as the idols of Goddess Durga and other deities.
Describing the idol, Rakshit said, “If you look at Maa Durga’s idol, you will see that she has been depicted in the traditional Andhra style and decorated with Kalamkari art. Her attire features Kalamkari designs, and the pillars of the temple-like structure surrounding her also incorporate this art form, including the sections featuring Ganesh, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and Kartik. We usually worship Maa Durga as the goddess who slays the demon. Through the idol, we have also depicted a form inspired by Akal Bodhan from the Ramayana, the tradition of worshipping Maa Durga at an unusual time.”
The Kalamkari-themed pandal celebrates India’s artistic heritage and highlights the importance of preserving traditional crafts for future generations.
