Kelly Clarkson publicly criticised a New York novelty store over a singing bird item, and Vogue Williams has weighed in with her own thoughts and slammed the American Idol winner
Vogue Williams has risked the wrath of Kelly Clarkson after she called out the singer over her “naming and shaming” of a curiosity shop. Kelly, who rose to fame after winning the first series of American Idol in 2002, has found herself embroiled in a feud with the New York novelty toy store Art of Play after claiming she was treated poorly by a member of staff.
The row came about after the 44-year old alleged online that she was “looked at as if I couldn’t afford” a singing bird item with a price tag of $15,000 (£11,000). “Just drove all the way to Brooklyn to check out this store I thought looked really rad and had a few things in mind to buy and literally was looked at as if I couldn’t afford it and was told he could find something comparable for me,” Kelly wrote on X.
The Since U Been Gone star added: “Wow, dude. You’re an idiot and just lost a huge sale. But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman. For sure, check it out.”
Kelly was referencing a scene in the 1990 hit film that saw Julia’s character, Vivian Ward finding herself in a similar scenario.
The tweet has been viewed more than 46 million times and has seemingly struck a chord with media star Vogue, 41, who is married to Made In Chelsea’s Spencer Williams.
Speaking on the My Therapist Ghosted Me podcast show with co-host Joanne McNally, she said: “I think she could have called it out, but I don’t think that she should have named and shamed.
“I’d be very, very slow to ever name and shame. I just don’t think it is fair even if those people are being an a****** I just wouldn’t do it. I’d feel too guilty.”
And recalling a similar instance she once found herself in, Vogue went on: “I once went into a big shop that I could name and shame. I went in and I wanted to try on a dress and the same thing, they were like, ‘That dress is three grand.’
“Now I wouldn’t have spent three grand on it but they didn’t know that. But anyway it was my right to try on the dress in the shop.
“But they obviously had spotted that I wouldn’t be spending the three grand in there and were just really funny about it, like a Pretty Woman kind of vibe. I’m surprised by Kelly Clarkson.”
Joanne agreed: “I would never say anything online. I’m the same and I just don’t think that it’s worth it. I think that you just have to breathe, count to ten and move on. I really do.”
To which Fade Street star Vogue replied: “Yeah, she shouldn’t have. But now she’s doubling down it makes it even worse because she’s had time to reflect.”
Art of Play also issued a response, meanwhile, telling Kelly in an Instagram post: “Molly’s not for sale yet has a $15,000 price tag. Kelly you will always be a real one.”
That only enraged Kelly further, however, who subsequently returned to X to post a damning response.
“Cool, cool. Sure, it wasn’t for sale,” she said. “That’s the narrative Art of Play is gonna go with so the whole conversation we had when I asked you if it was for sale whilst pointing to the price tag hanging on the wall with the title Singing Bird didn’t happen as you elevator eyed me saying in a condescending tone ‘yes, it’s for sale but it costs 15,000 dollars so if you’d like me to find something comparable for you I can’.”
She continued to rage: “That all never happened and now it’s not for sale. Okay, cool. So you’re not only rude, you’re also a liar. Got it.
“And by the way, I obviously support small businesses because I was literally at a small business trying to purchase things. I love small businesses and know they are important and I always support them, but you don’t get a free pass to treat people less than in your store just because you are a small business.
“It’s not that hard to be kind. I never blast people but you my friend were an exception. Your store is really cool. Unfortunately, you aren’t.”
Security footage from Art of Play now shows an agitated Kelly pointing at the shop’s employees, right before she stormed off the premises.
The silent footage was obtained by Pablo Torre, host of the podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out, and he shared it on his YouTube account.
In the video, Kelly walked into the busy shop in a yellow shirt, blue jeans and a baseball cap. She was seen browsing the store’s items before approaching an employee to ask about the bird, who is permanently attached to the wall.
When Kelly pointed at the bird on the wall, the employee shook his head and pointed at something underneath the bird. Kelly is then seen pointing to another section of the shop and the worker moved towards it.
But when he looked back at Kelly, she was not looking in his direction or following him, and he started speaking to another customer.
The singer, who appeared agitated, started gesturing while speaking to another employee behind the shop’s counter.
