Hyderabad:The Singur reservoir, one of the drinking water supply lifelines for several parts of Hyderabad, has water just for 23 days – till November 9 — at the current supply levels as on October 17. After that, with the help of emergency pumping from the reservoir’s dead storage level, supplies can be extended till December 10.
In addition to supplying water to the western sections of the Greater Hyderabad area as well as some interior areas such as Khairatabad, the Singur reservoir and the Manjeera barrage are also the lifelines for several urban local bodies (ULBs) and 2,395 rural habitations supplying drinking water to them under the Mission Bhagiratha scheme.
Under Mission Bhagiratha, water from Singur is supplied to 852 rural habitations and 12 ULBs in Sangareddy, 805 rural habitations and two ULBs in Medak, 202 rural habitations and an ULB in Nizamabad, and 536 rural habitations and three ULBs in Kamareddy district.
As on October 17, the Singur reservoir has just 3.416 tmc ft of water left but with the HMWS&SB making alternative arrangements to augment supplies to areas served in Hyderabad by Singur water, efforts were now on to find a way to meet the water requirements of the rural habitations and urban local bodies that Singur serves. When the water runs out, it is expected that groundwater sources will be pressed into service in rural areas, and where required, transport water through tankers to such habitations, it is learnt.
It is also learnt that for making alternative water supplies to the Singur affected ULBs, the panchayat raj department has written to the engineer-in-chief of the public health and municipal engineering department to make alternative supply arrangements for the ULBs from December 10.
