Coronation Street star, Julie Hesmondhalgh, who was banished from Celebrity Traitors earlier this month, has spoken refreshingly about not being ‘traditionally beautiful’

Celebrity Traitors star Julie Hesmondhalgh has hinted there was a secret fallout in the castle that viewers never got to see.

The Coronation Street legend, 56, who was banished from The Traitors castle earlier this month, is one of the most respected actresses in the UK and despite being voted most trustworthy by her fellow players, she was banished in the fourth episode roundtable, all to reveal she had always been a Faithful.

However, Julie has said she struggled with anxiety in the castle – and that she had to undergo strict psychological assessments to even be considered to join the show.

“Ross Kemp and Romesh Ranganathan were brilliant allies in a situation that is properly scary. There are lots of psychological assessments before you start and you plunge into these accelerated relationships,” she said.

“But I didn’t expect it to be quite so challenging. You don’t go to bed till very late and you get up very early. And the challenges are quite physical. I have huge status anxiety – who’s an A-lister, who’s a Z-lister? It’s mostly a class thing. I worry I’m not as well educated as other people. Everyone suffers anxiety, even if some of the other contestants showed it in a jarring way.”

Julie also hinted at a potential feud in the castle that we didn’t get to see. When asked who annoyed her, she quipped to The Times: “I’m not answering that,” but did say she loved being on set with James Blunt.

“I’ve definitely made some friends for life in there and there’s a very active WhatsApp group … James Blunt [was my favourite]. He’s cornered the market in self-deprecating humour.”

After catching out thespian Richard E Grant, Julie said it was one of the highlights of her life. She said: “It was the best feeling, I cannot begin to tell you how incredible that feeling is.

“Right up there with marriage and childbirth! But of course it created this atmosphere of such cockiness and such blood thirstiness, it was a bit of a poisoned chalice ultimately. It’s been the experience of a lifetime, so joyful. I’ve laughed till I’ve cried, most hours of the day. I’ll really miss being part of it.”

And on being voted the “most trustworthy”, she added: “I think being voted as most trustworthy before anyone knew me, so only based on vibes, was a truly lovely thing. It was quite humbling to know that it was just a public persona perception thing.”
