Chennai:A car got stuck in a waterlogged subway connecting East and West Tambaram following heavy overnight rain, triggering concerns over the preparedness of the Tambaram Municipal Corporation to handle flooding during the northeast monsoon.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning lashed Chennai’s suburban areas from Saturday night until Sunday morning, causing rainwater to accumulate in the subway, a key link between the two parts of Tambaram.

Cars, autorickshaws and two-wheelers travelling from GST Road towards the Tambaram-Velachery Main Road use the underpass. However, accumulation of rainwater made passage difficult, leaving motorists struggling to negotiate the flooded stretch.

A car attempting to cross the subway got trapped and was partially submerged. The occupants got out of the vehicle and local residents helped retrieve it from the flooded stretch. The incident caused commotion in the area.

Motorists alleged that the electric pumps installed to remove rainwater from the subway were not switched on promptly, allowing water to accumulate further.

Residents urged the Tambaram Municipal Corporation to strengthen its monsoon preparedness, operate pumps promptly during heavy rainfall and intensify monitoring of vulnerable subways to prevent similar incidents.

They also called for faster rainwater-removal operations and adequate safety measures to protect motorists from being stranded in flooded underpasses.
