The family of Narayana Das Sona (19), who died in the tragic incident at MVSR College grounds in Nadergul, is struggling to come to terms with the loss. Her younger sister, Narayana Das Meena (18), who witnessed the accident, is recovering in hospital.
“We named her Sona, her pet name was Sony. My younger daughter is Meena. On Saturday night doctors first said Meena’s brain was dead, later they said she was in coma. We were confused until she was shifted for better treatment to a private hospital in Malakpet. Both daughters spoke to us at 4 pm that day, excited about the Dandiya event at their college. Sona said she and Meena had packed their luggage and would come home for Dussehra celebrations,” said their father Narayan Das Ashok, a goldsmith.
“I never thought that was my daughter’s last call. I tried calling Sona and Meena after I heard about the incident, around 9.20 pm, when their collegemate Anjana asked us to rush to Kamineni Hospital. We were not aware we had lost Sona until we reached the city. Later came another shock when doctors spoke about Meena,” said their mother Narayan Das Lakshmi, in tears.
Parvati, Sona’s aunt, said: “Being a goldsmith, my brother Ashok named Sona after gold and Meena after a precious stone. Sona glittered like gold, Meena was bright like a gem. Ashok had saved gold for their marriages but had to sell it to pay fees after both got admission in the same college.”
There was a heated argument between the victim’s family and MVSR College management at the mortuary after Namah Shivaya, HOD, offered several lakhs to the family. They refused and demanded stern police action against the management. SHO Ramesh intervened and assured that justice would be done as per law.
“We had given the entire contract to a private organiser and our staff were present at the time of the unfortunate incident. Sona was pursuing her second‑year B.Tech (EEE) and Meena her second‑year B.Tech (CSE),” Namah Shivaya said.
The victim’s body was handed over to her family, who took it to their native place in Wanaparthy district for the last rites. Women family members remain at the private hospital in Malakpet where Meena is undergoing treatment.
