Freiburg squandered the chance to return to the top of the Bundesliga after going down 2-1 at Bayer Leverkusen this afternoon.

The Black Forest club took the lead at the BayArena through Derry Scherhant’s 14th-minute goal only for Ibrahim Maza to equalise five minutes later.

Czechia international Patrik Schick grabbed the winner with 14 minutes to go, converting Maza’s cross. Schick has now scored in each of Leverkusen’s first six games of the league season, matching the record of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (2015-16 for Borussia Dortmund) and Robert Lewandowski (2019-20 for Bayern Munich).

Borussia Monchengladbach’s miserable start continued as they remained without a point after losing 2-1 at home to Hoffenheim.

Oyarzabal at the double for Sociedad

Real Sociedad moved up to fifth in La Liga with a convincing 5-2 victory at winless Malaga, World Cup hero Mikel Oyarzabal among the goalscorers.

Osasuna beat Racing Santander 2-0 and Celta Vigo edged out Alaves 2-1.

In Serie A, Como’s fine start continued with a 3-1 victory at Fiorentina while Portugal international Goncalo Ramos was on target as AC Milan edged out Atalanta 3-2 at San Siro.

Monaco missed out on top spot in Ligue 1 after losing 1-0 at Lorient.

Paris FC are up to second after Lassine Sinayoko netted a 97th-minute penalty to see off Rennes in a seven-goal thriller. France international Esteban Lepaul scored a hat-trick for Rennes but it was not enough.

Marseille continued their resurgence after a slow start with a 5-2 win at Angers.

Leaders Paris Saint-Germain have 14 points, as do Paris FC, Lille and Monaco.
