Imagine sitting in your local pub having a pint with pals, only to be serenaded by a celebrity without you realising it at first. When the penny dropped, you’d probably be gobsmacked, as it’s the last thing you’d expect when you’re nowhere particularly special.
But that’s exactly what happened when one man started playing the piano, and people soon realised he was a major A-lister. The co-owner of the Duke of Marlborough Hotel in Russell, New Zealand, confirmed that the celebrity and some friends turned up out of the blue, and he treated patrons to a purely instrumental performance without any of his own songs.
The singer even raised the lid of the piano to conceal his identity from other pub-goers, but he didn’t sing on this occasion.
Who treated pub-goers to a musical performance?
It was ‘Baby’ singer, Justin Bieber, 32, and he just wanted a quick tinkle on the ivories before he went on his way with friends.
“He was just after a few beers and some snacks, and he saw our baby grand piano in the corner, and he just jumped on and started knocking out a few tunes,” Duke of Marlborough co-owner Anton Haagh told RNZ.
He said that he was playing a “lot of modern music” but not singing any lyrics, probably not wanting to draw attention to who he was.
Some people reportedly noticed who he was but were encouraged to give him and his party space, as it must be tough to be a celebrity out and about.
However, when 30 or 40 fans caught wind of his random appearance, he quickly decided to leave the premises.
Justin has been documenting his New Zealand trip on his Instagram page, and it looks like he’s been having a lot of fun! Fans have even commented on his posts, saying he looks really “happy” in every single photo and that it “looks good” on him.
He went golfing, swimming, fishing and even boarded a helicopter, from which he saw breathtaking views of the gorgeous countryside. People noticed, however, that his wife, Hailey Bieber, was not with him on his travels.
