Real Madrid claimed a fourth straight win in all competitions as they beat RB Leipzig 4-1 to ensure they will go into Sunday’s Clasico on a high, with Yan Diomande on target against his former club.
Madrid meet arch rivals Barcelona at the Camp Nou this weekend in desperate need of a victory to cut their six-point deficit to the defending LaLiga champions at the top of the table.
While Barca will go into that game on the back of a thrilling 4-2 loss at Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain, Madrid came through a strong test in ultimately routine fashion to make it three wins from three in the league phase.
Bernardo Silva broke the deadlock from point-blank range with his first goal for Madrid since joining from Manchester City, and there was no way back for Leipzig after Arda Guler netted his second goal in two games.
Kylian Mbappe bent into the far corner to make it 3-0 before Tidiam Gomis replied with a consolation for Leipzig, though the final say fittingly came from substitute Diomande.
Diomade produced a sparkling volley against the club he left this summer in a deal worth up to €140million, giving the scoreline an emphatic appearance that did not look likely in the opening stages.
Madrid get perfect Clasico preparation
Leipzig found plenty of joy going forward in early going, with Thibaut Courtois required to produce a fine save to keep out Romulo Cardoso’s superb effort on the turn.
Vinicius Junior then saw a bending effort parried away by Maarten Vandevoordt, whose goal was later cleared by a frustrated Jude Bellingham as Madrid sought to break the Leipzig resistance
Courtois rescued Madrid again after Christopher Nkunku was played through on goal, and Leipzig were punished for failing to take their opportunities to open the scoring as Silva got off the mark for Los Blancos.
He reacted quickest after Vandevoordt failed to properly deal with Guler’s low strike. The goalkeeper got contact on the shot but only succeeded in taking pace off it as it squirmed through his legs, with Silva on hand to tap in.
Vinicius was then denied by Vandevoordt for a second time, but there was nothing the Belgian could do seven minutes into the second half as Mbappe headed Bellingham’s deep cross back across goal for Guler to prod home.
Mbappe missed a chance to make it 3-0 by uncharacteristically firing into the side-netting but, as the game appeared to meandering towards its conclusion, he atoned for that miss with a superb curling strike from the edge of the area.
Gomis pounced on poor Madrid defending as he slotted home after linking up nicely with Christoph Baumgartner to give Leipzig something to cheer, but Diomande restored the three-goal cushion when he produced a stunning illustration of why Los Blancos paid such a sizeable fee to prise him from the Bundesliga side, meeting Brahim Diaz’s ball with a remarkable volley that flew into the top-left corner.
