Dame Judi Dench says she can no longer be in films or star in plays because of her deteriorating eyesight.
The legendary British actress, 91, was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in 2012 and her vision has slowly worsened over the years. The condition means that a person’s central vision is limited, making it difficult to see in front of them.
Judi has been open about her struggles with her eye condition and her memory and has previously shared how she struggles with remembering appointments and being able to see faces.
Giving fans an update, she told BBC Radio 4 Today how her eye condition has limited things she can do now. She said: “I can’t be on stage. I can’t do a play any more. I can’t do a film any more. I can’t read any more.”
Asked specifically about ageing, she added: “There’s nothing to say for it at all. [I] don’t think about it too much.”
Addressing interviewer Emma Barnett, Dame Judi said: “I can’t see your face at all.”
She has previously described her struggles to see as faces being “in a fog”. She said a few months ago that it was a “crusher” that she can no longer watch television. “I miss seeing Clive Myrie doing Mastermind but I can hear the questions,” she said.

In 2023, she revealed her failing eyesight was having an impact on her career and she had to think of different ways to do her job. She said: “I can’t see on a film set any more. And I can’t see to read. But you just deal with it. It’s difficult if I have any length of a part. I haven’t yet found a way. Because I have so many friends who will teach me the script.”
Judi says she now goes out with someone at all times due to her worsening eye condition.
“Somebody will always be with me. I have to now because I can’t see and I will walk into something or fall over,” she shared, “I’m always nervous before going to something. I have no idea why… I’m not good at being on my own at all, nor would I be now. And fortunately, I don’t have to now because I pretend to have no eyesight.”
