Three horses die in fire at Austria riding stable

Three horses died when a fire spread through a riding stable in Lanzendorf, Austria, early on Wednesday morning.

The fire began at around 5am. Lanzendorf is a small town in the state of Lower Austria, close to the capital, Vienna.

The roof of the stable was already fully on fire as emergency crews arrived. Other horses were taken to safety, but authorities did not publish the total number rescued.

About 140 firefighters from 18 local fire services attended the incident. The fire reached the highest local alarm level and a nearby regional road had to be closed.

The structure later became unsafe to enter because parts were at risk of collapse. Firefighters brought the main fire under control during the morning and continued working on remaining hot areas.

Animals can’t escape from stable fires

Horses cannot usually escape locked stalls without human help. Smoke and heat can also spread rapidly through buildings containing hay, straw, bedding and wooden structures.

Rescuing horses requires planning. Frightened horses may refuse an unfamiliar route or try to return to a stall where they normally feel safe.

Fire-safety guidance therefore recommends a clear emergency plan, accessible halters and lead ropes, known escape routes and a secure outside area away from roads and emergency vehicles. Electrical equipment and stored hay also need regular checks.

The cause of the Lanzendorf fire is still under investigation.
