Every proposal story has a plot twist. Ranbir Kapoor’s had three of them, with manes. The actor recently revealed how he proposed to Alia Bhatt in Kenya’s Maasai Mara in 2022, and why he felt like a mouse asking his lioness to marry him.
He shared the story on the Kaun Banega Crorepati Diwali Special, telling Amitabh Bachchan how carefully he had planned it. “Maine pehle se hi apna jo guide hai, jo driver hai, maine unko ek tip de di thi ki aap kahin jaake rok dena beech jungle mein… main main ek angoothi laya tha ki main apne ghutno mein jaunga aur aap door se photograph khichna kyunki ladkiyon ko photographs ka bahut shauk hai.. Instagram pe dalne ka, toh maine socha ki yeh bahut zaroori tha Alia ke liye..”
In plain terms, he had tipped his guide, who doubled as the driver, to stop somewhere in the middle of the jungle. The plan was to go down on one knee while the guide clicked photographs from a distance, because Alia would want pictures for Instagram.
Bachchan, always quick with a one-liner, chimed in. “Par sir ek… proof hona chahiye..” Ranbir then explained why the moment was far from the picture he had imagined. “There should be proof… No, I did have the ring; I had brought it from home. But, sir, the situation was such that… there were three male lions about 100 feet away, my lioness was standing in front of me, and I was like a mouse, down on my knees, asking, ‘Baby, will you marry me?’ So, I think it was a very, very extraordinary experience in my life, one that I will always remember.”
Alia and Ranbir fell in love on the sets of Brahmastra and married in April 2022. They welcomed their daughter, Raha, in November that year.
Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi appeared on Amitabh Bachchan’s talk show to promote their upcoming film, Ramayana. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The much-anticipated mythological epic is slated for a grand theatrical release on November 5, 2026.
A ring in hand, a jungle all around and a pride of lions for company. Nobody can say it wasn’t memorable.
