Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick says Bruno Fernandes is “fully committed” after remaining an unused substitute for the home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday following the captain’s public criticism of the Premier League strugglers’ tactics.
The reigning Premier League Player of the Season said the decision not to press Como man-for-man in United’s 4-1 away defeat in the Champions League last Wednesday was “on the manager and staff”, leading to the Portugal playmaker moving to the bench for the 3-0 thrashing by the Cherries in the Premier League.
“It was a decision for what we felt for the game,” said Carrick, who was widely reported to have held clear-the-air talks with his star player on Tuesday.
“That’s it. Bruno’s fully committed to this football club. I’ve got absolutely no issues with that. We move forward and make decisions as we go.”
Manchester United: Will Bruno Fernandes play vs Chelsea?
Should Carrick and Bruno Fernandes have resolved the situation, the 32-year-old could return to the starting line-up for United’s trip to Chelsea on Saturday (12:30 GMT).
“I have to say, the boys are hungry,” suggested Carrick, adding that his squad are “looking forward” to attempting to end their eight-match winless run in all competitions against opponents who are six points above them.
“There’s an intensity, a bit of an edge, a disappointment and a hunger to do better.”
Michael Carrick news: Will United sack manager?
United director of football Jason Wilcox is said to have decided that Carrick will be given more time despite his side’s dreadful form in the former Red Devils midfielder’s first full season in charge.
Carrick, who made United the form team in the top flight and guided them to Champions League qualification after being appointed on an initial interim basis in January, reiterated that he has not been considering his position.
“I really don’t need any assurances from anyone,” said the 45-year-old, whose exit is considered a formality by many fans and pundits.
“I understand the job, the responsibilities and what comes with that. I care about what the supporters think. I care about what it feels like in the stadium and travelling for games.
“I care about what we give them and what they see. I genuinely don’t take any notice of anything else. I know this job, I know what it brings and what we need to do to be better. I don’t need anyone else to tell me.”
