Patrick Stewart Admitted His Relationship With His Kids Was 'Non-Existent', 'I Could've Done Better'

Patrick Stewart, the legendary actor best known for playing ‘Captain Jean-Luc Picard’ in Star Trek: The Next Generation and ‘Professor Charles Xavier’ in the X-Men franchise, reflected on his strained relationship with his children before his death at 86. He admitted that his dedication to his career came at a personal cost.

While Stewart earned worldwide recognition for his performances, his family life was far more complicated. In his final years, he confessed to being an absent father and grieved his “practically non-existent” relationship with them.

Patrick Stewart regretted putting his acting career before his children

In an October 2023 interview with the Irish Independent, Stewart spoke about his estrangement from his two children, Daniel and Sophie, whom he shared with his first wife, Sheila Falconer. The couple married in 1966 and welcomed their son, Daniel, in 1967, followed by their daughter, Sophie, in 1972. After more than two decades together, they divorced in 1990.

Looking back on his strained dynamic with Daniel and Sophia, Stewart acknowledged that he largely prioritized his professional ambitions over family during his marriage to Falconer. Decades later, he faced the painful consequences of his choices. Stewart told the outlet:

“There’s not a day that goes by that I’m not pained by the memory of my children, who they were and by a sense of responsibility that they became who they are in part because of me and my influence or lack of influence on them.”

The actor was equally direct about where he believed he had gone wrong. He regretted not being there for his children as much as he should have. He shared, “I always put my acting work first, before my family. I could’ve done better as a parent when my kids were little. I was just obsessed with my work, and everything else took second place.”

Despite the distance, Stewart suggested that he was trying to make amends in whatever ways he could, particularly through his relationships with his grandchildren. He added, “I’m trying to correct that now whenever possible with my grandchildren. And my own children seem to have forgiven me.”

Where are Patrick Stewart’s children now?

Patrick’s son, Daniel Stewart, followed his father’s footsteps and became an actor himself. In an interview with PEOPLE, the Star Trek icon shared his admiration for Daniel, who was his first child. He said, “I loved Daniel when he was little, and when he was a baby, I loved holding him. It was fantastic.”

Daniel appeared alongside his famous father in several productions, including a 1992 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, the 1993 film Death Train and the 2015 sitcom Blunt Talk. Their appearance together in Star Trek: The Next Generation was particularly memorable for Stewart, as well as his fans. Daniel starred alongside Patrick in the show’s episode titled “The Inner Light,” playing ‘Batai,’ the on-screen son of Patrick’s character, ‘Captain Picard.’

Daniel has also shared his own experience growing up in a family where both parents worked in the arts. In a 2015 interview with USA TODAY, he reflected on how his upbringing differed from that of many other children. The actor shared, “This industry and the fact that we’re both in it brings up all kinds of bizarre circumstances. lives we lead can be sort of ridiculous. My upbringing wasn’t a typical one in that my mum and dad came home at 5 and dinner was on the table at 6.”

Daniel has continued working in television, film and theatre. He has been married to actress Mary Stillwaggon Stewart since 1999, and they have two children.

When Stewart’s daughter Sophia was born, he revealed he was “very much a caretaker” to her in the first two years of her life, as his work was slowing down while Falconer’s career was booming. The actor told PEOPLE, “The first two years of her life, I was very much a caretaker because her mother was a wonderful dancer and appeared in musicals. I took over the job of being mom and dad, and I loved it. It was marvelous.”

Sophie Alexandra Stewart has largely stayed out of the public eye, except for occasional appearances with her legendary father at premieres and award ceremonies. She had accompanied Stewart at the 2002 London premiere of Star Trek: Nemesis and the 2009 Laurence Olivier Awards.

Following his divorce from Falconer in 1990, Stewart married television producer Wendy Neuss in 2000. Their marriage ended in 2003. In 2013, he married singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell, who was 38 years younger than him. The couple remained together until his death, and Ozell was by his side during his final days.

Stewart died at his home in Los Angeles on October 28, 2026. His spokesperson announced his death the following day, confirming that he had been in the care of Ozell following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

Patrick Stewart suggested that his children had forgiven him, but the emotional distance between them remained a painful part of his life.
