Rosie O’Donnell has recently been making headlines after her longtime friend Ricki Lake opened up about her recent facelift. Ricki stated that Rosie was initially ‘a little judgy’ about her and other women getting cosmetic surgeries. However, her views changed after she herself underwent cosmetic procedures, including a pricey facelift. Notably, Rosie once admitted she regretted a particular cosmetic treatment and explained why.
Rosie O’Donnell regretted undergoing a cosmetic procedure
There was a time when Rosie O’Donnell was absolutely against any kind of surgical or non-surgical cosmetic enhancements. She used to think that she would never get facelifts or other procedures done. However, she ended up trying Botox and hating it. In August 2025, the comedian and actress reflected on her use of Botox during her days on the Oprah Winfrey Network, calling the enhancement a “huge mistake.”
At that time, Rosie shared an old picture of herself from an episode of The Rosie Show, taken right after she got Botox on her face. The 64-year-old shared that seeing her forehead with no fine lines made her feel like she had masking tape wrapped around it. Rosie O’Donnell regretted getting the procedure done and called it a ‘huge mistake’. Adding that she wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, she mentioned:
“Me on the own network right after I tried botox – a huge mistake- my head felt like i had masking tape on it – do not recommend #nobotox.”
In a 2021 interview with Vulture, Rosie O’Donnell opened up about her thoughts on plastic surgery and why she felt avoiding it would benefit her acting career. She shared that her audience was used to seeing her a certain way on The Rosie Show, and after it ended, she felt it would be difficult for them to see her play a different character in movies or series. On top of that, she didn’t want them to feel she looked unrecognizable because of her cosmetic procedures.
Additionally, Rosie wanted to age naturally, as she considers it a ‘blessing.’ She also felt she had been getting acting offers in her 60s because she looked natural. She was glad to take whatever opportunities came her way. She also predicted that she would “get to play the Colleen Dewhurst roles. That has turned out to be true.” Opening up about it, Rosie stated:
“By the time I left my show in 2002, I was very well-known as that character. I think it would have been hard to cast me in a role in a movie. I always knew as an actress that when I got into my 60s, I would be playing the Geraldine Page roles. I wasn’t going to have plastic surgery. I was going to look the way a woman my age should look, and I always thought that would be a blessing in my older age.”

Rosie O’Donnell shared a Substack post titled decisions, which included her thought process behind undergoing a facelift and the results, which she shared in unfiltered before-and-after photos. The actress revealed that the cosmetic procedure ‘cost more money than I have ever paid for a car.’ She recalled that she always felt “very strongly about facelifts” and prided herself on being someone “who would never – ever” get one.
However, Rosie did end up getting the facelift done, and the results seemed fine in the then-vs-now comparison photos she shared. Her smile lines and overall face appeared a bit lifted in the ‘now’ photo, in which she seems happier. Although the procedure was a success and boosted her confidence, she shared that she wants her kids to know they are beautiful just the way they are and don’t need to undergo any treatments to alter their physical appearance.
