Chennai: Former Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday appealed to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to fully reopen ‘Amma pharmacies’ to provide life-saving medicines to the poor at a lower price.
In a statement here, Palaniswami said the ‘Amma pharmacies’ were opened in 2014 by Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s government since the pharma companies raised the prices of life saving drugs to earn high profits.
The scheme was extended under his government, he said but the DMK government paralysed the scheme by providing it to private companies in 2021. Palaniswami said the pharma companies are selling the lifesaving medicines at more than 30 per cent profits and asked the Joseph Vijay’s government to reopen ‘Amma Pharmacies’.
