6 ways to maximize the Capital One Venture Rewards as a beginner

Sometimes, simplicity is king. And that’s certainly the case with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

The Venture Rewards is a card I frequently recommend to beginners who want to earn rewards they can maximize for travel.

Why? Because for a reasonable $95 annual fee, the card earns at least 2 miles per dollar spent on every purchase, making it easy to build a rewards balance without keeping track of bonus categories. Plus, it offers valuable travel perks and flexible redemption options, whether you want to keep things simple or explore more advanced strategies.

Whether you’re new to earning travel rewards or recently picked up the card yourself, here are six beginner-friendly ways to make the most of the Venture Rewards.

Use the welcome offer to help cover your next trip

Earning a welcome bonus is one of the easiest ways for beginners to kick-start their points and miles journey.

Currently, new Venture Rewards cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. Plus, they’ll also receive a $300 credit for Capital One Travel hotel and vacation rentals upon account opening.

According to TPG’s October 2026 valuations, Capital One miles are worth 1.85 cents per mile. When including the credit, the total value of this welcome offer comes to $1,688. That makes this offer the most valuable we’ve seen in over two years.

Those 75,000 Capital One miles can be a great starting point for anyone new to maximizing points and miles.

And as for the $300 Capital One Travel credit, it’s a great way to dip your toe into the world of travel portals. You could use it to cover a weekend hotel stay, save on a vacation rental or offset the cost of a more expensive trip.

Just remember that the credit must be used toward eligible hotel or vacation rental bookings through Capital One Travel within your first cardholder year.

Earn miles on everyday purchases

One of the Venture Rewards‘ best perks is that it earns at least 2 miles per dollar spent on every purchase.

With some travel rewards cards, you earn more points when spending in certain everyday categories. But with the Venture Rewards, you’ll earn 2 miles per dollar whether you’re filling up your tank, furnishing your apartment or stocking your fridge.

The card also earns 5 miles per dollar spent on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

TPG lead writer Katie Genter has held the Venture Rewards for more than a decade and still finds it useful for everyday purchases: “I like the Venture’s straightforward earning structure and the fact that it earns versatile yet valuable Capital One miles.”

She often uses her Venture Rewards for purchases that would earn just 1 point or mile per dollar with another rewards card.

If you’re new to the world of points and miles, the Venture Rewards can be a great place to start, given how simple it is to earn rewards that can then be used for travel, which we’ll cover below.

Book through Capital One Travel to earn more miles

Another way to maximize your Venture Rewards as a beginner is to book eligible travel through Capital One Travel, the issuer’s online travel booking platform.

As mentioned above, Venture Rewards cardholders earn 5 miles per dollar spent on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through the portal, compared to the standard 2 miles per dollar on other purchases.

For example, booking a $1,000 hotel stay through Capital One Travel would earn you 5,000 miles (compared to 2,000 miles if you booked directly with the hotel). That’s an additional 3,000 miles, worth approximately $56 according to TPG’s valuations.

Capital One Lifestyle Collection

Plus, Venture Rewards cardholders can access Capital One’s Lifestyle Collection, which offers benefits such as a $50 experience credit for each eligible hotel stay and potential room upgrades (when available).

However, I don’t recommend using the portal as your default method of booking travel. You usually won’t earn hotel loyalty points or receive elite status benefits when booking through a third party, so it’s worth comparing prices and benefits before making a reservation.

Still, for beginners looking to earn more miles without changing their spending habits, Capital One Travel can be a useful tool.

Take advantage of the card’s travel perks and protections

Beyond earning miles, the Venture Rewards comes with several travel perks that can help you save money and make your trips a little easier.

One of the most useful is a statement credit of up to $120 (every four years) for a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee. All you need to do is pay the application fee with your card, and you’ll receive a statement credit for the eligible charge.

Both programs can help you save time at the airport, but Global Entry also includes TSA PreCheck benefits, so I recommend it for international travelers.

Another perk for international travelers is that the Venture Rewards charges no foreign transaction fees. This means you can use your card abroad without worrying about the additional fees some credit cards charge on international purchases.

The card also offers several travel protections, including an auto rental collision damage waiver and travel accident insurance, which can provide some added peace of mind when you’re away from home.

You can also enroll in complimentary Hertz Five Star status, which comes with benefits like a wider selection of rental vehicles and the ability to skip the rental counter (at certain locations).

For a card with a $95 annual fee, these perks can offer strong ongoing value, especially if you travel a few times a year.

Redeem miles to cover travel

If you aren’t ready to transfer your miles to travel partners but still want to redeem your rewards for travel, another option is to use your miles to cover eligible travel purchases.

Rather than searching for award availability or navigating airline loyalty programs, you can book an eligible travel purchase with your card and redeem miles to offset the charge within 90 days of the purchase.

When you redeem miles this way, each mile is worth 1 cent. That’s less than TPG’s valuation of Capital One miles at 1.85 cents per mile, but it offers a straightforward way to use your rewards.

For example, if you book a $300 flight with your Venture Rewards, you can redeem 30,000 miles to cover the purchase. You can also use this feature for other eligible travel expenses, including hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars.

TPG director of site strategy Carly Helfand has relied on this method before, redeeming 100,000 Capital One miles to cover a last-minute Airbnb purchase.

While transferring miles to travel partners can yield higher redemption values, covering travel purchases is a useful alternative when you want to book directly or can’t find award availability that works for your dates.

Transfer miles to travel partners for higher-value redemptions

For potentially higher-value redemptions, consider transferring your Capital One miles to the issuer’s airline and hotel partners.

If you’re new to the world of travel rewards, transferring miles simply means moving your Capital One miles into another travel loyalty program, where you can then redeem them for flights or hotel stays.

Capital One has more than 15 travel partners, including Air France-KLM Flying Blue, British Airways Club and Wyndham Rewards.

Most of Capital One’s airline partners offer a 1:1 transfer ratio, meaning 1,000 Capital One miles become 1,000 miles in the partner program. However, some partners have different ratios, so be sure to check before transferring.

Personally, I love transferring my Capital One miles to airline partners to book flights to and around Europe.

For example, I recently transferred about 6,000 Capital One miles to Air France-KLM Flying Blue to book a Scandinavian Airlines flight from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). I paid just $11 in taxes and fees for a flight that would have otherwise cost about $450 in cash, giving me 7.3 cents per mile in value — well above TPG’s valuation of 1.85 cents per mile.

If you’re just getting started, don’t feel like you need to master transfer partners right away. You can begin by redeeming miles for travel purchases and explore transfers as you become more comfortable.
