The Devil in the Department
Director Puri Jagannadh was looking for an actor who could bring considerable conviction and intensity to a powerful role. Given Tabu’s reputation as one of Indian cinema’s most versatile performers, the filmmaker felt she would be the ideal choice. Her commanding screen presence and willingness to take on complex, layered characters reportedly made her a natural fit for the part.
In Slumdog: 33 Temple Road, Tabu plays Gauri Hegde, also referred to as Gowri Hegde. As a fearless and formidable Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, she is expected to bring considerable authority to the narrative.
Described in the film’s promotional material as the “devil in the department”, her character is tough, courageous and uncompromising. The role also sees Tabu take on action sequences, lathi-wielding fights and intense interrogation scenes, including a confrontation with Vijay Sethupathi’s character.
The gritty action thriller explores the harsh realities of beggars and takes on those who exploit vulnerable communities living in slums. Slumdog: 33 Temple Road features Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role, alongside Samyuktha and Duniya Vijay, who reportedly plays a character with negative shades.
