Tamil cinema’s favourite parody franchise is making a comeback. Director CS Amudhan has officially commenced filming for Tamizh Padam 3, the third instalment in the franchise, with actor Shiva returning to headline the film. Announced on Thursday, November 5, the upcoming project promises to take the franchise’s trademark humour into seemingly uncharted territory, with its first-look poster hinting at an intergalactic adventure.

Interestingly, Shiva has been introduced as the Intergalactic Superstar this time, replacing his familiar Agila Ulaga Superstar moniker. The poster features the actor dressed in a suit, standing face-to-face with what appears to be an alien spaceship. While the makers are yet to reveal details about the storyline, the visual suggests that extraterrestrial elements could be part of the film’s satirical universe.

AP International and YNOT Studios are backing the project, with S Sashikanth and Chakravarthy Ramachandra serving as producers. YNOT Studios was also associated with the production of the first two films in the franchise. Further details regarding the extended cast and technical crew are currently awaited.

A Look Back At The Tamizh Padam Franchise

For the uninitiated, CS Amudhan made his directorial debut with Tamizh Padam in 2010. At a time when commercial Tamil cinema was dominated by familiar storytelling conventions, the filmmaker attempted something rather unconventional. Headlined by Shiva, the film took aim at popular cinematic tropes, exaggerated hero introductions, formulaic romantic sequences and several other familiar elements of mainstream Tamil films.

Despite having a relatively straightforward narrative, the film found its strength in its relentless parody of the industry’s conventions. From mass hero mannerisms to predictable commercial cinema storytelling, practically every familiar trope was fair game. The film eventually emerged as a commercial success, establishing a distinct identity for itself in Tamil cinema’s comedy landscape.

Amudhan returned with Tamizh Padam 2 in 2018, bringing back Shiva alongside Sathish and an ensemble cast. The sequel expanded the scope of its predecessor’s humour, taking aim at contemporary Tamil cinema while also incorporating references to international pop culture. Among its many targets were popular Hollywood properties such as Game of Thrones. The film also poked fun at the representation of police officers and law enforcement in mainstream Tamil films, continuing the franchise’s irreverent approach to cinematic stereotypes.

With the third instalment arriving eight years after its predecessor, the franchise appears ready to find fresh material to poke fun at. Whether the alien-themed imagery signals a full-fledged science-fiction spoof or is simply another elaborate joke remains to be seen.

What Are CS Amudhan And Shiva Up To?

Beyond the Tamizh Padam franchise, CS Amudhan has directed Raththam (2023), an action thriller featuring Vijay Antony in the lead role. The film revolved around a journalist who finds himself investigating a series of murders, with the case gradually revealing a larger connection between the crimes.

Shiva, meanwhile, had two theatrical releases in 2025. The actor appeared in the long-delayed Sumo and Ram’s critically acclaimed Paranthu Po. The latter featured an ensemble cast comprising Aju Varghese, Grace Antony, Mithul Ryan and Anjali, among others. Unlike his usual comic outings, the film offered Shiva an opportunity to explore a different kind of performance.

He was also involved in the writing process for Sumo, contributing to its screenplay and dialogues in addition to playing the lead role.

With Tamizh Padam 3, Shiva and CS Amudhan are reuniting for a franchise that has consistently found humour in the conventions of Tamil filmmaking. Now that the cameras are rolling, audiences will be waiting to discover which cinematic trends, celebrated blockbusters and familiar star mannerisms will become the next targets of their parody.
