Regina Cassandra Opens Up About Her Experience With Dharma Questions The North-South Divide Debate

Reacting to recent comments by Bollywood actors on the portrayal of women and working conditions in South Indian cinema, Regina Cassandra has spoken out against what she believes is an increasingly divisive north-south narrative. Janhvi Kapoor and Radhika Apte recently discussed issues such as objectification and representation in southern films, citing examples like Ram Charan’s Peddi and Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Legend. Regina feels that such remarks, even if not intended to create one, risk reinforcing a north-south divide. She believes that framing the conversation along regional lines is fundamentally wrong.

‘I Found It Strange’

Speaking to India Today, Regina said, “There are different ways of handling this. Also, Janhvi has spoken about being objectified on Karan Johar’s show, the same Karan’s Dharma Productions decided not to promote me in their film Kesari 2. Now, what am I supposed to call that? Objectifying what? That I am a South-Indian?”

She went on to say that she found the treatment particularly strange, pointing out that even when the production house shared a song from Kesari Chapter 2 on Instagram, it did not tag her despite her featuring in it.

Regina’s larger point is that conversations about representation and objectification should not be restricted to one film industry or region. While Janhvi has spoken about her experiences on Karan Johar’s chat show, Regina is questioning the treatment she received from the filmmaker’s own production house. Her experience, she suggests, raises questions about how actors are acknowledged and promoted, irrespective of the industry they come from.

Multilingual Outings

Regina is a familiar face across the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi film industries. She made her Tamil debut with Kanda Naal Mudhal and went on to gain recognition with Maanagaram. In Telugu cinema, she is known for films such as Subramanyam for Sale and Evaru. Her Hindi projects include Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and the 2025 action drama Jaat, opposite Sunny Deol. Regina also has a prominent role in Mookuthi Amman 2, the Tamil film slated for a Diwali release.
