A 52-year-old British man is facing up to seven years in prison in Singapore for allegedly concealing a camera inside an aircraft toilet during a flight from Japan to Singapore and subsequently attempting to destroy evidence, according to media reports.
The man, identified as Hugh Lutley, was charged on Thursday with one count each of voyeurism and obstructing the course of justice, Channel NewsAsia reported. The incident took place on October 7 aboard Scoot flight TR821 travelling from Osaka, Japan, to Singapore.
According to the charges, Lutley allegedly concealed a camera inside one of the aircraft’s toilets and remotely activated its recording function through a mobile application on his phone after leaving the restroom. A cabin crew member later discovered the hidden camera while using the toilet. She removed the device and alerted a colleague.
The man allegedly attempted to retrieve the camera but found that it had already been removed. He then deleted the mobile application and related photographs from his phone in an alleged attempt to avoid detection.
He was detained for investigations after the aircraft landed at Singapore’s Changi Airport. Police seized his mobile phone and the camera. If convicted of voyeurism, Lutley could face up to two years in prison, a fine, caning or a combination of these punishments.
The charge of obstructing the course of justice carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years, a fine or both. According to court proceedings, Lutley indicated that he would plead guilty. He was offered bail of 10,000 Singapore dollars, with a pre-trial conference scheduled for November 17.
