Ramayana: Part 1 Box Office Day 2: Ranbir Kapoors Epic Sees Drop Despite Positive Word Of Mouth

Ramayana: Part 1, which opened to a strong yet somewhat below-expectations response at the box office, has shown further signs of slowing down on its second day in theatres. Despite generating largely positive word of mouth, Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious mythological epic witnessed a considerable decline in domestic collections, making its upcoming weekend performance particularly important.

Headlined by Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi and Ravi Dubey, the film has been one of the most anticipated Indian productions in recent years. Mounted on a massive scale, the two-part cinematic adaptation of the Ramayana has also attracted considerable attention for its ensemble cast and visual ambition. While its opening numbers indicated a promising start, the second-day figures suggest that the film will need to sustain audience interest if it is to achieve the kind of box office run expected of a production of this magnitude.

According to Sacnilk, Ramayana: Part 1 collected Rs 48.05 crore nett across all languages on its second day. The Hindi version contributed Rs 35.5 crore nett to the overall figure. This represents a 26 per cent decline from its opening-day collections, a relatively significant drop for a film that has otherwise received encouraging feedback from audiences and critics.

The film has nevertheless crossed the Rs 100 crore nett mark at the Indian box office within its first two days. Its Hindi version, meanwhile, is expected to cross the Rs 100 crore nett milestone on Saturday, adding another significant achievement to its domestic run.

Ramayana: Part 1 Witnesses A Drop In Overseas Collections Too

The decline has not been restricted to the domestic market. Ramayana: Part 1 also registered a 30 per cent drop in its overseas collections on its second day. Despite the fall, the film managed to bring in approximately Rs 35 crore gross from international markets, indicating that it continues to enjoy a substantial theatrical presence beyond India.

The overseas performance remains an important component of the film’s overall box office prospects, particularly given its scale and the anticipation surrounding its international release. However, the second-day decline across markets makes the next few days crucial in determining whether the film can build on its initial momentum.

Another development worth noting is the reduction in the number of shows across theatres. Ramayana: Part 1 reportedly witnessed a seven per cent decrease in its overall show count, despite the largely positive response it has received. While a reduction in screenings does not necessarily translate into diminishing audience interest, it is an indicator worth monitoring as the film enters its first weekend.

Can The Diwali Festivities Boost The Film’s Box Office Performance?

The timing of the film’s theatrical run presents an interesting box office scenario. The coming weekend coincides with Laxmi Puja, making the next few days particularly significant for the film. Traditionally, the period immediately preceding Diwali, along with the four to five days following Laxmi Puja, has been favourable for theatrical business, with audiences often making time for cinema-going during the festive break.

However, whether Ramayana: Part 1 can benefit from this seasonal advantage remains to be seen. Given the religious significance of the source material, the film could potentially attract audiences looking for a cinematic experience rooted in Indian mythology. At the same time, the festivities could influence viewing patterns, with family commitments and celebrations affecting theatre attendance.

The film’s ability to convert positive word of mouth into sustained footfalls will be particularly important. A strong weekend could help compensate for the second-day decline and establish a healthier trajectory for its theatrical run. Conversely, if the collections continue to fall despite the festive period, the film could face a more challenging box office journey.

Produced by Namit Malhotra, Ramayana: Part 1 features an extensive supporting cast, including Lara Dutta, Rakul Preet Singh, Arun Govil, Sheeba Chaddha, Kajal Aggarwal, Vivek Oberoi and Anupam Kher, among others. Sunny Deol is expected to appear in the second instalment of the franchise, which is scheduled to arrive in 2028.

For now, the focus remains firmly on the weekend numbers. Having crossed the Rs 100 crore nett mark domestically, Ramayana: Part 1 has made a substantial beginning. Whether it can translate that start into a sustained box office success will become clearer over the next few days.
