Adilabad:Drinking water supply to Adilabad municipality under Mission Bhagiratha has dropped from 32 million litres per day (MLD) to 18.5 MLD, raising concerns over a possible shortage of drinking water in the coming days.

The municipality has a population of 2.20 lakh.

Water to Adilabad municipality comes from the Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) through Nirmal. Irrigation officials have made it clear that supply would not exceed 20 MLD in the coming days.

Following this development, municipal authorities have proposed drawing water from the Korata-Chanaka canal.

Adilabad municipality’s water storage tanks have a combined capacity of 14.5 MLD. However, irrigation officials have confessed that a part of this water is being lost through leakages at several places. Moreover, the water bodies supplying water to the municipality are nearing depletion.

To augment water supply, the municipality is planning to purchase 315 HP motors, construct a check dam at Landasangi village at a cost of ₹4 crore, spend ₹25 lakh on materials required for borewells, and set up an additional water treatment plant at a cost of ₹10 crore from the UCF funds.

Municipal authorities are also addressing the shortage with 1.5 MLD of water from Mavala tank and 6 MLD from the Landasangi stream pump house, in addition to the supply from SRSP.

Recently, the municipality carried out repairs to plug leakages in the 600-diametre main pipelines supplying water under Mission Bhagiratha. A leakage had developed at a T-joint in the main pipeline due to high pressure.

Adilabad municipal chairperson Anusha Bandari said, “We are making serious efforts to see that there would be no drinking water problems in the municipality in the coming days.”

She informed that borewells are drying up following a sharp fall in the groundwater table due to the El Nino effect in Adilabad town.

Municipal authorities are creating awareness among residents about avoiding wastage of water at homes, commercial complexes, hotels, and vehicle cleaning centres. Some private schools are also educating students about water conservation, the effects of El Nino, and the impact of drought on agriculture and drinking water sources.

Amid the prevailing conditions, authorities are keeping an eye on the misuse and wastage of water to take necessary action.
