Hyderabad: HYDRAA has cleared encroachments from a historic temple tank at Jagadgirigutta, bringing relief to residents and devotees. The issue gained public attention after a video of temple priest Narahari went viral on social media.

In the video, he emotionally appealed to save the temple tank (koneru), which was being encroached upon and filled with debris. Responding to the video, HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath visited the site in January last year and assured him action.

Jagadgirigutta is home to several well-known temples, including Venkateswara Swamy Temple, Hanuman Temple and Govindarajula Swamy Temple. The temple tank plays an important role in collecting rainwater flowing down the hill.

On Tuesday, HYDRAA officials removed illegal encroachments and cleared nearly 26 truckloads of construction waste, garbage, and debris from the temple tank. The tank, spread across about one acre, had been partially filled with soil and was being used as a parking area by locals. Officials acted swiftly to stop further attempts to occupy the water body.

The Agency also initiated steps to restore the temple tank, giving it a renewed appearance. The move has been welcomed by both residents and devotees, who praised HYDRAA’s efforts in protecting heritage and religious sites.

Priest Narahari said his 22-year-long struggle had finally been resolved, and said that he might not have seen the tank restored in his lifetime. He thanked the government and HYDRAA for taking action.
