A $44 million superhero horror film won the box office this weekend. A $7 million documentary came within $5 million of beating it

DC Studios’ Clayface took the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend with an estimated $24.5 million. The more surprising result was right behind it. A24’s You Can See Everything grew its weekend gross 25% in its second frame to $19.5 million. It finished No. 2 for the second weekend in a row and lifted its domestic total to $45.1 million.

Second weekends almost always fall. A nearly three-hour documentary going up instead is rarer still.

A24 released the Nathan Fielder- and Lance Oppenheim-directed documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in just 855 theaters last weekend. It grossed $15.6 million in its opening weekend and averaged $18,245 per theater. That beat new narrative releases including 20th Century Studios’ Whalefall and Focus Features’ Sense and Sensibility (NBC News). It ranked second behind Paramount’s Street Fighter, which opened to about $31 million from 3,575 theaters.

‘Street Fighter’ takes a 72% hit

For its second weekend, A24 expanded You Can See Everything by roughly 1,800 theaters to 2,655 locations, more than tripling its footprint. Street Fighter went the other way. The video game adaptation fell to No. 4 with $8.6 million, a 72% drop from its debut.

The weekend’s other newcomers landed in between. Laika’s stop-motion fairy tale Wildwood opened in third with $11.6 million, and Wicker debuted in fifth with $5.7 million. You Can See Everything outgrossed both.

A smaller bet for DC

Clayface, an R-rated body-horror film about the Batman villain, opened in 3,458 theaters and earned an A- CinemaScore. It was produced for a reported $44 million, a modest budget for a comic book movie. That contrasts with Supergirl, which in June posted one of DC Studios’ worst opening weekends. The film is one of the first major releases from Warner Bros. since its merger with Paramount.

Still, Clayface landed below the studio’s weekend projection of $25 million to $30 million. In its second weekend, the documentary came within about $5 million of beating a studio comic book adaptation.

A test of the documentary’s legs

The wider release was a real test for You Can See Everything. Its huge first-week per-theater average could have come mostly from A24 loyalists and Nathan Fielder fans in coastal cities. Instead, the film held up across 2,655 theaters in the U.S. and Canada, averaging about $7,345 per location. It earned $6.1 million on Friday, $6.9 million on Saturday and $6.4 million on Sunday.

Against a reported production budget of about $7 million, the film is already a major win for A24, and a career milestone for Fielder. It already ranks among the highest-grossing documentaries of all time. Its opening was the second-best ever for a non-concert documentary, behind Fahrenheit 9/11, which went on to earn about $119 million domestically. With strong reviews and audience scores, awards pundits say it could become the first documentary ever nominated for Best Picture at next year’s Academy Awards.

The overall market is healthy too. Total weekend box office reached $94.9 million, up nearly 22% from the same weekend in 2025. Year-to-date ticket sales have hit $8.4 billion, about 20% ahead of last year’s pace. Next weekend will be quieter: few studios are releasing films because Halloween falls on a Saturday.
