BENGALURU: A resident of Siddharatha Nagar in Mysuru city, Suresh and his family members went through anxious moments on Friday after a leopard strayed into the house to settle in a bedroom for a couple of hours before it was captured by forest personnel particularly by personnel of Leopard Task Force.

A leopard about 4 years old was sighted in Siddhartha Nagar by some residents and alerted the forest personnel. A search for the wild animal went futile as the animal could not be sighted/traced in a search in the residential area. Meanwhile, a leopard had quietly made its way into the house of a resident Suresh who was hooked to his laptop keeping the door of his house open to allow fresh air to get in.

The maid on her routine domestic chores at the house came across a leopard in the corner of the room and alerted her boss. Suresh’s wife in seconds lifted her 90 year old mother-in-law out of the bed where the leopard had settled.

Meanwhile, Suresh was quick to lock the door to trap the leopard inside. Leopard Task Force personnel and Shashidhar, a veterinarian from Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, Mysuru city arrived at the scene. After assessing the weight of the strayed leopard, Shashidhar darted at the animal but it did not work. Later, another dart sedated the leopard. Personnel from the Leopard Task Force were quick to net the leopard which had taken shelter under the cot.

DCF Parameshwar said the leopard might have strayed from nearby Chamundi Hills, a reserve forest and forest sources suspect the leopard could have strayed from Varakodu village having patches of forest. The rescued leopard will be released into the wild.

The house owner Suresh said he was unaware of how a leopard entered his house when he was busy working on his laptop. Wife of Suresh said she attended to her mother-in-law but did not come across the leopard in the bedroom. “It did no harm to us,” wife of Suresh.
