Aaron Rodgers knows why he’s looked like one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL through two weeks – and it has nothing to do with his on-field performance.
Rodgers took a dig at head coach Mike McCarthy after the Steelers were smashed by the Patriots 20-3 on Sunday.
“In a game like today where there wasn’t a lot of flow to it, we need to be better, and it starts with me,” Rodgers said during his postgame press conference before going a different direction with his comments.
“Making sure that Mike knows what’s working and what’s not working. The coaches know, so that we can call stuff that gives us a better chance.”
Rodgers went 23-for-29 for 187 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while also fumbling the ball once in a scoop-and-score that put the game out of reach.
The always passive-aggressive Rodgers really struggled on Sunday and looked every bit his 42 years; even through the first half, he had just 84 yards on 22 passing attempts.
It’s not clear what Rodgers considered “working”, as the Steelers had 1.4 air yards per throw and were constantly checking the ball down on short passes to the receivers and running backs.
Roman Wilson also fumbled a screen pass in one of the few times they actually got deep into New England territory.
Running the ball wasn’t working either.
Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle had just 91 yards on 23 rushing attempts in Sunday’s contest.
Rodgers was eventually benched for backup quarterback Mason Rudolph late in the fourth quarter and during garbage time.
The Steelers will need to right the ship quickly as they head to Cincinnati to play a revamped Bengals defense that has looked legitimately solid early in the season.
