Injured and stranded wild animals in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, are the focus of a new wildlife rescue network.
The Abu Dhabi Wildlife Response Network brings together government bodies, wildlife organisations, researchers, businesses and members of the public. The agency says the network will help teams respond to animals in distress and coordinate their care.
Under the system, reports are recorded and assessed before a specialist team is sent to help. Animals who need further treatment can be taken to a rehabilitation centre for veterinary care. Those who recover can return to the wild, while others may need longer care.
The network was presented at an event on Saadiyat Island. Sea turtles who had completed rehabilitation were released into the sea at the end of the event, according to state news agency WAM.
The initiative builds on the agency’s rescue work since 2016, which began with sea turtles and later included sea snakes, dugongs, dolphins and birds.
