Eva Marie Saint, who won an Oscar for her role in Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront, has died aged 102, surrounded by friends and family at her Los Angeles home
Oscar-winning actress Eva Marie Saint has died, aged 102. The star was best known for playing Marlon Brando’s love interest in On the Waterfront and femme fatale Eve Kendall in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest.
Jeff Sanderson, a representative for the Saint family, confirmed the star’s death in a statement. He said she died on Tuesday 6 October of natural causes and was surrounded by family and friends at her home in Los Angeles.
Eva, who was born in New Jersey in 1924, had a Hollywood career that spanned more than six decades. She started working in television when she appeared in the NBC TV show Campus Hoopla from 1946 to 1947, but burst to stardom when she played Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan’s 1954 thriller On the Waterfront.
Critics highly praised Eva’s acting and she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar that year, as well as a nomination for a BAFTA for Most Promising Newcomer.
Five years later, she would play Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant in North By Northwest, for which she was lauded as an iconic leading lady. Her other accolades also included an Emmy win in 1990 for her role as a rich widow in the TV miniseries People Like Us.
She stepped away from acting to raise a family, and is survived by her son, who was born two days after she won the Oscar, and her daughter, as well as four grandchildren. Eva shared her children with director Jeffrey Hayden, whom she was married to for 65 years before his death in 2016.
