Vijayawada:Minister for medical and health Satya Kumar Yadav on Wednesday warned that strict action would be initiated against government hospitals and officials if performance standards and medical services failed to improve.
Following directions from Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and the health minister, the medical and health department conducted special review workshops with medical superintendents, medical officers and district health officials from poorly performing hospitals across the state.
The reviews were based on patient feedback collected through the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS), which assessed satisfaction levels in government hospitals between April 25 and May 25. Officials said the IVRS findings had nearly 95 per cent reliability.
Officials from primary health centres, urban health centres, district hospitals, community hospitals, regional hospitals and teaching hospitals identified among the lowest performers were called for review meetings in Amaravati, Mangalagiri, Kunchanapalli and Vijayawada.
Before the workshops, Satya Kumar Yadav held a high-level meeting and directed officials not to show leniency towards negligence in duty. He said absenteeism of doctors, poor sanitation, inadequate patient care and indifferent administration would not be tolerated.
Health commissioner G. Veerapandian, addressing a workshop at Mangalagiri, sought explanations from medical officers of primary and urban health centres whose patient satisfaction ratings ranged between 52.86 per cent and 81.25 per cent. He warned that repeated poor performance would invite disciplinary action.
At the same time, around 30 doctors who secured 100 per cent patient satisfaction ratings were invited to share best practices in patient care and hospital management. Veerapandian appreciated their services and urged other doctors to follow similar standards.
Director of secondary health K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu separately reviewed 20 low-performing secondary hospitals from 10 districts and cautioned superintendents against continued underperformance.
Director of medical education Dr Raghunandan and additional DME Dr Radhika Reddy also reviewed the functioning of teaching and speciality hospitals, including government general hospitals in Kurnool, Anantapur, Kadapa, Adoni, Ongole, Srikakulam and Tirupati.
Officials from all 26 districts participated in the review exercises, which the government described as the first coordinated performance accountability initiative for public hospitals in the state.
