Former American Idol contestant and church pastor Caleb Flynn was found guilty of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, who was fatally shot in the head multiple times. The 40-year-old was convicted on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, for the murder of Ashley Flynn, 29, at their Tipp City home in Ohio.
Flynn was found guilty of all nine counts against him. He became emotional as the verdicts were read, sobbing and wiping his eyes in court.
Mistress testifies about Flynn’s disturbing messages hours before Ashley’s murder
Among the evidence presented during the trial was a cryptic message Flynn allegedly sent to his former mistress, Alleigha Botner, in the early hours of February 16, 2026, the same day Ashley was killed.
“I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow,” Flynn wrote, according to testimony. Flynn had also discussed divorce with Botner and allegedly planned to confront Ashley about ending their marriage.
Botner testified that she understood the phrase “actions will come tomorrow” to mean Flynn intended to take steps toward divorcing his wife. But Ashley was killed before that could happen.
The lovers reportedly met in 2022 while Botner was an intern at Flynn’s church. She testified that their sexual relationship began in 2024 and continued for roughly 18 months while Flynn remained married to Ashley.
Botner told jurors that Flynn repeatedly expressed hostility toward Ashley and spoke about wanting her dead. In one message from August 2025, Flynn allegedly wrote that he had stayed awake until 4 a.m. thinking about ways to kill Ashley without going to jail. He also allegedly wrote, “I just want her dead and gone,” in another exchange.
Botner herself had previously sent Flynn a message saying, “I want to kill her, Caleb.” She became emotional while reading the message in court and said she did not mean it literally. She later clarified that she wanted Flynn to divorce Ashley rather than harm her. She wrote in one message:
“I’m not asking that you take her life, obviously, because that’s not what you should do, and I know you actually wouldn’t. But to make the divorce happen, it would change everything.”
Botner was not charged in connection with Ashley’s killing. When prosecutors asked how she now felt about Flynn, she bluntly said, “I hate him… Because I believe that he murdered his wife.”
Caleb Flynn says an intruder killed his wife
During a videotaped police interview shown to court, investigators directly questioned Flynn about whether he had anything to do with his wife’s death. According to the recording played in court, the former pastor said, “I’m telling you, I didn’t touch my wife.”
In interviews with investigators, Caleb said he had left the couple’s bedroom because his coughing was disturbing his wife. He told police he eventually fell asleep in one of their daughters’ bedrooms after checking on the children.
According to the American Idol star’s account, he woke up to the sound of gunshots and discovered Ashley in bed with gunshot wounds. His frantic 911 call was also played during the trial, where he can be heard screaming, “Somebody broke into my home. Somebody broke into my home and shot my wife.”
Jurors ultimately rejected Flynn’s account and found him guilty on all nine counts, including aggravated murder, multiple murder counts, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence. He is scheduled to be sentenced on October 5, 2026. He faces a potential life sentence without the possibility of Parole.
