Bengaluru: A group of people on Saturday allegedly smeared ink on playwright Addanda Cariappa during a theatrical performance in Bengaluru, for allegedly portraying Mahatma Gandhi as anti-national, police said.

The incident took place at a film academy in Banashankari here, they said.

Following the incident, both the group that staged a protest against the play and the playwright filed separate complaints at the Banashankari police station.

According to a complaint filed by Kushal Hanumegowda and 14 others, the play titled ‘Gandhi Hatheya Kicchu’ allegedly portrayed Mahatma Gandhi as anti-national and Nathuram Godse as a hero.

The complainants alleged that the play blamed Gandhi and the Congress for the country’s Partition.

They also objected to the audience raising slogans condemning Gandhi during the performance.

“We have received complaints from both the parties and are examining them. However, no FIR has been registered in connection with the incident yet,” a senior police officer said, adding that investigation is underway.
