CHINCHUGHAT (ADILABAD): With devotion, several Adivasi communities celebrate Muharram in their gudems in erstwhile Adilabad district, performing special rituals along with Muslim Mujawars. SC, ST and BC communities in many villages also worship the Peerilu.
Kolams, a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group, along with Pardhans, Andhs, Gonds and Naikpods, take part in the observance. The tiger dance performed by Adivasis during Muharram is a major attraction.
Villagers carry Peerilu from one village to another as part of the tradition. Adivasis say they have been setting up Peerilu in their gudems for generations, continuing the legacy of their forefathers.
A festive atmosphere prevailed at Chinchughat on June 25, with Peerilu from Chinthalbhori, Tekidigudem, Chinna Chinchughat and Pedda Chinchughat being brought together. Devotees performed Assaydhoola around the gudem.
Mesram Purushotham of Chinchughat said villagers have been worshipping Peerilu for many years. They offer Udu Dhoopam, also called Dhupera in Gondi, along with Mujawar Sulthan. Villagers also prepare Malinda Muddalu and kichidi and serve them to devotees.
Many villages have Savari Bungalows, considered sacred places where Peerilu or Savarilu are kept after the Muharram observance. Devotees offer Datti, which is tied to the Peerilu.
Political leaders from various parties also visit Savari Bungalows and participate in Muharram events. Ruyyadi village in Talamadugu mandal is famous for its Muharram observance. Adivasis also celebrate Muharram in Kanchanpalli in Sirpur (U) mandal, Gonduguda, Boddiguda and Anji in Indravelli mandal, Ankoli in Adilabad rural mandal and several other villages in erstwhile Adilabad district.
