Lions reject latest offer for Coleman

By Michael Gleeson

The Keidean Coleman trade is looking in serious doubt, with the Brisbane Lions having rejected Essendon’s latest offer of pick No.27 and a second round pick in 2028.

The teams have until the trade deadline at 7.30pm (AEDT) to complete player moves.

Swans boss says Blakey, club needed fresh start

By Sam McClure

The Swans have conceded a fresh start was ultimately in the best interests of both Nick Blakey and the Swans, revealing they only became aware of the defender’s determination to leave in recent days.

Swans list manager Chris Keane said the club received a clear indication of Blakey’s intentions midway through last week, before negotiations with North Melbourne accelerated towards a deal involving the Kangaroos’ prized pick No.6.

The departure of one of Sydney’s most important players follows a tumultuous period for the club, with Keane acknowledging the Pullman Hotel scandal had been particularly challenging for both Blakey and the Swans.

“I think, clearly, it’s been a relatively challenging period over the last couple of months, I’d say, for the club and for Nick as well,” Keane said.

Hayes says Saints must make Nas, Hall want to stay

By Michael Gleeson

St Kilda football manager Lenny Hayes has put the onus on his club to make Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera and Max Hall want to remain with the Saints.

Both players are out of contract at the end of the 2027 season.

The Saints saw ruckman Rowan Marshall leave for Geelong and Lions premiership midfielder Sam Marshall arrive during the trade period, while Nick Blakey opted to go to North Melbourne after meeting with several clubs – including the Saints.

“We’re really comfortable where those discussions are at the moment. I’m not going to put a timeline on that,” Hayes said on the contract talks.

Giants boss doesn’t rule out future tilt for English

By Roy Ward

GWS list boss Jason McCartney is bullish about his side’s prospects next season, despite losing some veteran stars, while he also intimated the club would chase Bulldogs ruckman Tim English again next year.

The Giants lost veterans Toby Greene, Lachie Whitfield, Jesse Hogan and Jake Stringer since the season ended, but McCartney believes his group have emerging leaders and young talent who can replace those proven performers.

But he gave a pointed response when asked about English, who was linked with a move to the Giants after his wife, Australian netballer Rudi Ellis, secured a multi-year deal with NSW Swifts.

English has since seen Zak Butters join his club’s midfield brigade to play a starring role alongside Marcus Bontempelli and Ed Richards.

Pies get better but miss out on Short

Collingwood list and talent general manager Justin Leppitsch cut a frustrated figure as his side left Marvel Stadium tonight after talks for Richmond’s Jayden Short collapsed.

The Magpies only have two lists spots left and picks 11 and 30 in the draft to fill them with after securing veteran stars Lachie Neale and Jesse Hogan, plus young ruckman Flynn Riley earlier in the trade period.

But Short’s move collapsed on Wednesday as the Magpies decided they couldn’t find an offer that suited the Tigers. Leppitsch said he wouldn’t go into specific details on talks with the Tigers.

“It just couldn’t be done – [that’s] a little on our end as well,” Leppitsch said.

Dons dig their heels in over Coleman pick

By Michael Gleeson

Essendon remain adamant they will not trade a pick earlier than this year’s No.27 for Keidean Coleman (the Lions have asked for pick 17, while the Dons also have No.21).

But the two clubs have begun discussions around pick 27 and a future pick for the contracted defender.

Jayden Short to the Pies won’t happen

By Michael Gleeson

Jayden Short will not become a Magpie.

Collingwood has told Richmond today they will not pursue a trade for the contracted Richmond premiership player despite having courted him and offered him a contract in the event that a trade went through.

The Magpies have only two list spots available at the moment in the national draft and have said they are intent on keeping their first two draft picks, currently No.11 and 30.

As a Collingwood source remarked, a player would have to go out for the club to be able to bring a player in.

Giants turn pick 20 into two picks; Roos strike out in pick search

By Peter Ryan

The GWS Giants have managed to find themselves a first round pick landing pick 20 for the Lions in exchange for picks 25 and 29.

The Giants also received pick 59 in the deal.

It means the Giants have converted Lachie Whitfield into pick 20 after trading him to Carlton yesterday.

The Lions’ incentive to take the two picks was to stockpile points for Caylen Murray who is an academy prospect.

Not exactly hold the back page, but it will be relevant for the draft.

The Kangaroos are desperately searching for pick 20 or better to land Nick Murray but no-one is budging.

Murray camp fear North deal may not get done

By Marc McGowan

There are still three-and-a-half hours to go until the trade deadline, but the Nick Murray camp are beginning to fear he will not get to North Melbourne.

Confidence was high for most of the trade period, but it has sunk on deadline day as Adelaide refuse to budge.

The Crows say they will trade Murray if the deal is fair – but fair to them is a top-20 pick.

After exploring all options, the Roos have not been able to land one.

Murray’s team do not believe Adelaide are bluffing on their request for a top-20 selection, but that will play out across the evening.

The deadline is 7.30pm, and unlike Brisbane’s Will McLachlan, Murray is contracted and doesn’t have the ability to walk to the pre-season draft.
