Bhubaneswar: Doctors at the department of burns and plastic surgery of AIIMS Bhubaneswar have successfully removed a rare 7-kg giant tumour from the arm of a 47-year-old woman, restoring mobility and significantly improving her quality of life after nearly three decades of suffering.
The patient, a daily-wage labourer from Baripada in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, had been living with a massive Plexiform Neurofibroma affecting her left upper limb. The tumour extended from the middle of her arm to the back of her hand and had progressively increased in size over the years, severely impairing her daily activities.
According to doctors, the enormous growth had become extremely heavy, restricting shoulder movement, compromising hand function and making routine tasks increasingly difficult. The skin covering the tumour had also become darkened and ulcerated due to prolonged pressure and stretching.
Detailed pre-operative investigations revealed a highly vascular lesion measuring nearly 45 cm in length, posing a major surgical challenge because of the high risk of excessive bleeding during removal.
Given the complexity of the case, the medical team adopted a staged surgical approach. The first operation, lasting nearly six hours, involved excision of the forearm component of the tumour. After a six-month recovery period, a second surgery of about three hours was carried out to remove the tumour mass involving the hand.
The surgical team employed advanced vessel-sealing technology, LigaSure, along with meticulous planning to minimise blood loss. Blood transfusion support was required during the procedures. The excised tumour tissue weighed approximately seven kilograms.
Following tumour removal, surgeons reconstructed the resulting raw areas using skin grafts harvested from healthy skin available on the excised tissue itself, eliminating the need for additional donor-site wounds elsewhere on the patient’s body. Doctors said the grafts have shown excellent uptake and the patient is recovering well under regular follow-up care.
Congratulating the medical team, AIIMS Bhubaneswar executive director Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Biswas described the successful surgery as a remarkable achievement that has given the patient a new lease of life.
