Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai have completed 19 years of marriage. They tied the knot on April 20, 2007. But when did they actually meet?

“Oh, that would be in 2000, on the sets of the late Raj Kanwar’s Dhai Akshar Prem Ke,” recalls Abhishek in an exclusive chat. The romantic film was a remake of the 1995 Hollywood movie A Walk in the Clouds.

“There was no inkling back then of what was to come. We got along very well. But did I suspect she was my soulmate? No!” says Abhishek, candidly.

Love happened many years later, on the sets of J P Dutta’s Umrao Jaan. That’s when Abhishek and Aishwarya became a couple. During the shooting, the two would take hours to reach the set. The short-tempered J P Dutta grew so agitated by the delay on one occasion that he cut one of Aishwarya’s elaborate costumes to shreds.

Says Abhishek, “We got married a few months after the release of our film Guru together, Mani Ratnam (who directed Guru) remains special for both of us. We consider him a dear friend and godfather. Today, Ash is not just the mother of my daughter — and full credit to her for bringing up Aaradhya with the right values — but also my soulmate. Nineteen years of our marriage has been a dream. I have big plans for our twentieth anniversary, but I am not telling you about them now.”

Asked about the secret of his successful marriage, Abhishek says, “Every night, before you sleep, say ‘Sorry’ three times to your wife without fail.”
