There are few things in life as reliable as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan making a statement on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival. This year, the actor wore a custom electric-blue Amit Aggarwal ensemble, styled by Mohit Rai. “There’s a lot that goes into conceptualising a Cannes look,” says Rai. “We’re working with an extraordinary person at a platform that is a pinnacle of cinema of fashion.” The fishtail silhouette, wave-like detailing and vivid blue hue looked almost oceanic, with a fantastical aura to it. The gown hugged the body before flaring dramatically at the bottom, with an exaggerated train trailing behind her while a long, flowy scarf rested loosely at her elbows.

Rai describes it as “an expression of Indian craftsmanship and couture technicality that shapes the body while allowing movement.” The look, titled ‘Luminara’, was designed around the idea of light in motion; not sparkle for the sake of sparkle, but to showcase energy and illumination. At the centre of the gown was Aggarwal’s signature ‘Crystal Vein’ embroidery technique, developed over more than 1,500 hours of handwork. Thousands of crystalline embellishments were connected through intricate lattice-like structures that created glowing pathways across the body. The overall effect was a shimmer that resembled moonlight hitting calm waters. The gown also featured wing-like extensions at the shoulders inspired by biomimicry, one of the designer’s recurring themes.
