Chennai: With the curtains coming down on the hectic campaigning for the April 23 elections to the State Assembly on Tuesday evening, major contenders for the Chief Minister’s throne came out with their final appeals through statements during the day, apart carrying out their campaigns seeking the people’s support and explaining why they deserved to be voted in .
DMK president and Chief Minister M K Stalin came out with a video message in which he said growth coupled with social justice was the prime concern of his party that could narrate for hours, nay days, what it did in the last five years of rule in the State if someone were to pop that question.
Accusing his bete noir and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami of being subservient to the BJP that had been working against the minorities unlike the DMK that would be the first to jump into the fray and fight for their rights, he said.
Pledging to protect the people of the State, he recalled his valiant fight against MISA in the 1970s as a youth and said today he was better equipped to ward off any threat to Tamil Nadu and urged the people to shun those who wanted to take away the Tamil people’s hard work, rights, culture and language and also their stooges.
For the present rate of growth and prosperity in the State to continue for another five years, he called upon the people to vote for Progressive Democratic Alliance and cautioned against the BJP and the AIADMK coming to power.
Palaniswami, in his message, said that he had already given 297 promises in his party’s manifesto, released in instalments, and added another 11 promises that included support to a wide range of people like mango farmers, palm climbers, cashew workers.
He invoked the name of his party founder M G Ramachandran and also former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in his appeal to the people and blamed Stalin for the price rise, hike in tax, rise in water and sewerage charges and illegal mining of minerals.
Urging the people to step out of their homes to cast their votes early on Thursday before the heat turns unbearable, he said the evil DMK government had to be defeated to uphold the promise of Jayalalithaa that the AIADMK would continue to function for the welfare of the people for hundreds of years to come.
President of Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam Vijay called the DMK as the political adversary and the BJP the ideological enemy and said that the TVK had surmounted several opposition from political opponents and survived as a savior of democracy. He said he would never bow down to the pressures exerted by the fascist anti-democratic forces.
The party that was formed with no political backing and had been widely welcomed by a wide range of people could not be defeated by toxic corrupt forces and fascist parties, he said, adding that no force could separate the TVK and its ardent supporters.
