KURNOOL: Byara Dargappa, who is undergoing treatment at the Kurnool Government General Hospital (GGH) after allegedly facing police torture, is reportedly recovering. The police torture case gained attention after the filing of a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Andhra Pradesh High Court on June 16 following the death of Mala Gangamma, a resident of Badinehal village in Kowthalam mandal of Mantralayam constituency.
The PIL alleged that Gangamma had died May 31 due to torture by police investigating her son’s missing case. Sources said both Gangamma and Dargappa had been subject to questioning by SIT police in the case. While Gangamma allegedly died due to the torture, Dargappa, who sustained serious injuries, is undergoing treatment at the Kurnool GGH.
Following the High Court’s directions, the police have recorded Dargappa’s statement and have submitted it to the court on Tuesday. Doctors at the Kurnool government hospital said Dargappa’s condition is improving. “His serum creatinine level had been recorded at 15, which is significantly higher than the normal range of 0.7 to 1.3. He had been put on dialysis for several days. Now, his levels have returned to normal,” a doctor said.
Sources said when doctors initially questioned Dargappa about his injuries, afraid of police, he claimed that he had fallen from a motorcycle. However, medical experts point out that such a fall would not normally require dialysis. Social activist K. Agaman Raj has approached the High Court seeking a probe into both Gangamma’s death and the injuries sustained by Dargappa. The petition has raised serious issues of alleged police excesses. Officials said that further action against police personnel involved in the torture is likely, depending on Dargappa’s statement submitted to the court.
