An alligator was captured and killed after a fatal attack on a fisherman in Winter Garden, Florida, in the United States.

Steven Hamilton, 71, was fishing at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park when the attack happened at about 5 p.m. on Friday, according to police accounts reported by the Associated Press.

Authorities recovered Hamilton’s body about two hours after the attack.

Police said trappers working with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission captured and killed the alligator. The animal was nearly 12 feet (3.7 metres) long.

The response forms part of a wider challenge in Florida, where people use waterways also occupied by alligators. The wildlife agency runs a programme to respond to concerns about these animals. It sends contracted trappers when residents report a problem.

The agency also publishes guidance on living alongside alligators and signs warning people about their possible presence in ponds and canals.
